Webinar: Violent Extremism and Terrorism - Exploring New Frontiers in West Africa

(January 31, 2020 12.00 GMT +1 / CET, register here)

This webinar, from our Peace Education webinar series, will highlight the emerging trend of violent extremism and terrorism in West Africa-Sahel belt and its implications for the coastal areas of West Africa, especially, Benin, Ghana and Togo. Lessons learned and recommendations for response and mitigation of the threats will also be shared.  The threat of terrorism and violent extremism in West Africa and the Sahel is of increasing concern to local, regional, and international actors. A recent United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) publication has shown that growing threats and acts of violent extremism and terrorism in the region have created a climate of fear and insecurity that continue to undermine peace and development efforts. In comparison to other regional blocks in Africa, West Africa has increasingly become a hotbed for predatory acts of a host of extremist groups. The trend of terrorist and extremist activities remains significantly high, especially in Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Mali and Niger.

Recognizing education as a major critical development intervention for peacebuilding and combating violent extremism, WANEP, with the technical and financial support of its partners, has developed a teaching curriculum to prevent violent extremism through peace education in the Sahel region and in Nigeria. The curriculum is developed primarily to be used by teachers and seeks to develop resilient citizens with the relevant knowledge and skills to contribute to the sustainable development of their communities and countries through their conduct as good citizens and their contribution to prevent violent extremism in all its forms. The experiences and how this works will be explained in this webinar.
