New Publication: Women, Peace and Security in Northeast Asia

2020 marked a milestone for the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Agenda. The year was not only characterized by the 20th anniversary of the UN Security Council Resolution 1325 (2000). It also marked the 25th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women, held in Beijing in 1995.

Our members Kim Jeong-soo (Women Making Peace), Dr. Akibayashi Kozue (Doshisha University / WILPF Kyoto) and Meri Joyce (GPPAC Regional Liaison Officer), took part in this landmark year by contributing to the recent publication of the United Nations Department of Political Affairs (UNDPPA) titled ‘’Women, Peace and Security: Voices from Northeast Asia’’

Together with other leading experts from Northeast Asia, our members reflect on the progress of the Women, Peace and Security Agenda in the region and highlight steps towards its further implementation.

Contributing to the UNDPPA publication was a unique opportunity for two particular reasons:

  • It allowed others from different regions to learn more about our members’ activities in Northeast Asia, as the region is not often discussed within broader WPS conversations;
  • It supported members to critically reflect on implementing the WPS agenda in Northeast Asia and share ideas for moving forward towards collective action together.
