GPPAC Calls on Belarus to Immediately Cease the Use of Force Against its People

The Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict (GPPAC) would like to express its resentment over the events currently unfolding in the Republic of Belarus.

Unprecedented election fraud combined with violence against people that peacefully protest against the announced results of the elections are unacceptable. The government of Belarus bears the responsibility for the current events and the human suffering that is caused by them.

We call on the government to immediately cease the use of force against its people, to organize an honest and transparent recount of the results of elections and to respect the decision of its people. The people of Belarus have the right to freely decide on who they trust to lead their country.

We condemn the imprisonment of people for opposing the current political regime including Siarhei Tsikhanovski, Viktar Babaryka, his son Eduard Babaryka and others. Current developments raise concerns that Belarus authorities may be using political prisoners as hostages in their attempts to silence their opponents, including the possible true winner of the presidential election - Svetlana Tsikhanovskaya. Arbitrary arrests of people for expressing their political position, the refuse to release political prisoners and other grave human rights violations should result in the strongest sanctions against the people and institutions that are engaging such appalling behavior.

We also express our concern with the blocking of electronic communications within Belarus. Such steps infringe on the rights of the people of Belarus to freely receive and exchange information, as well as they have a serious negative impact on the country’s economy.

We are concerned about recent reports of the use of ambulances by the Belarus police and security forces. Such cases, if they are confirmed, are not only a grave violation of key principles of humanitarian law, but also put in jeopardy the lives of people, requiring medical aid. 

We express our solidarity and support to the people of Belarus in their struggle for their rights including the right to hold fair and free elections. We call on them to use exclusively nonviolent means in this struggle.

Глобальное Партнерство по Предотвращению Вооруженных Конфликтов (GPPAC) выражает свое возмущение событиями, происходящими в настоящее время в Республике Беларусь.

Беспрецедентные фальсификации выборов в сочетании с насилием в отношении людей, мирно протестующих против объявленных результатов выборов, недопустимы. Правительство Беларуси несет ответственность за происходящие события и причиненные ими человеческие страдания.

Мы призываем правительство немедленно прекратить применение силы против своего народа, организовать честный и прозрачный пересчет результатов выборов и уважать решение своего народа. Народ Беларуси имеет право свободно решать, кому он доверяет руководить своей страной.

Мы осуждаем заключение в тюрьму людей за противодействие нынешнему политическому режиму, в том числе Сергея Тихановского, Виктора Бабарико, его сына Эдуарда Бабарико и других. Текущие события вызывают опасения, что власти Беларуси могут использовать политзаключенных в качестве заложников в своих попытках заставить замолчать своих оппонентов, включая возможного реального победителя президентских выборов - Светлану Тихановскую. Произвольные аресты людей за выражение своей политической позиции, отказ освободить политических заключенных и другие серьезные нарушения прав человека должны привести к самым строгим санкциям против людей и учреждений, которые проявляют такое ужасное поведение.

Мы также выражаем озабоченность блокировкой электронных коммуникаций на территории Беларуси. Подобные шаги ущемляют права жителей Беларуси на свободное получение и обмен информацией, а также имеют серьезное негативное влияние на экономику страны.

Мы обеспокоены недавними сообщениями об использовании машин скорой помощи белорусской полицией и силами безопасности. Такие случаи, если они будут подтверждены, являются не только грубым нарушением ключевых принципов гуманитарного права, но и ставят под угрозу жизнь людей, нуждающихся в медицинской помощи.

Мы выражаем нашу поддержку народу Беларуси в его борьбе за свои права, в том числе за право на честные и свободные выборы. Мы призываем их использовать в этой борьбе исключительно ненасильственные средства.
