Issue Paper 2: Civil Society Roles in Preventing War and Building Peace

Agents for Change: Civil Society Roles in Preventing War and Building Peace (Issue Paper No. 2 - PDF 904KB), by Dr. Catherine Barnes. The purpose of this study is to provide both an in-depth review of the many roles and functions that can be undertaken by civil society organizations and an overview of the key challenges facing the wider field of civil society working for peace. It is based on the experiences and discussions undertaken during the first three years of the Global Partnership and builds on the outcomes of regional conferences and action agendas, as well as the global conference "From Reaction to Prevention: Civil Society Forging Partnerships to Prevent Violent Conflict and Build Peace” that took place at United Nations Headquarters in New York in July 2005 and the Global Action Agenda which resulted.

Issue Paper 3: Networking for Peace

Networking for Peace: Opportunities for the Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict (Issue Paper No. 3 - PDF 758KB) by Willemijn Verkoren. This paper is the outcome of a review of the Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict and its regional networks. The review comprised a combination of surveys, interviews and discussions along with a literature study and the main conclusions of an expert panel. It was undertaken with the purpose of strengthening the network. This paper benefited from the insights and the practical experiences of the regional initiators of the Global Partnership, and was published under the auspices of the Network Building Programme.

This GPPAC issue paper sets out how a civil society organization working in the field of conflict prevention and peacebuilding should deal and interact with the media. The paper maps what the difficulties are for civil society talking to the media, and what skills or knowledge they should acquire to overcome these obstacles.

 

The paper was written by Lisa Schirch, Professor of peacebuilding at Eastern Mennonite University, and Vladimir Bratic, Assistant Professor of Communication Studies at Hollins University.
